YSL Volupté Tint-in-Balms | Review and Swatches

March 18, 2017

Yves Saint Laurent (YSL) lipsticks have a cult-like following and for good reason! Everything from their velvet-smooth formulas to their seductive shades and exquisite packaging make these lipsticks highly covetable and always feeling like a treat, a precious little gift to give and receive. There have been many different textures and formulas released over the years and if you’re wondering just how much different they can get, you’re in for quite a delectable surprise! The YSL Volupté Tint-in-Balm is a hybrid lipstick, a lightweight, pigmented and balmy formula in one of the most luxurious packaging you’ll ever lay your eyes on.  Not to mention it’s adorned with a cute little lip-shaped heart design featured in the center of the lipstick. Sold!

Over the years there hasn’t been a YSL lipstick launch that I’ve not loved. I’m always excited to see new products from YSL in general, they are one of my favorite beauty brands, but I also happen to have a special relationship with their lipsticks in particular. YSL lipsticks were my first high-end purchase many moons ago and probably the lipsticks I purchase and own the most of. There’s something about YSL lipsticks that’s always attracted me, the delicate feel of their formulas and the glamorous packaging, adding to the appeal.

A brand new launch from YSL this spring is the tint-in-balms, presented in the silver YSL signature packaging. I was immediately very intrigued by this product as the concept seemed very cleaver to me and I simply couldn’t get enough of the design! The dual formula is meant to condition and nourish the lips, while adding a glowing hint of color. The lip-shaped heart inner core delivers instant balm care with macadamia and apricot butters mixed with passion fruit, coriander and jojoba oils. This lip-shaped core runs from top to bottom so it never runs out. The outer core of the lipstick provides a glowing, sheer color that is vivid and luminous.

These tint-in-balms are such a dream to apply and even the more dramatic, intense shades are not intimidating to use! The more you apply and reapply, the more the color tint intensifies on your lips. The finish is a very elegant and flattering shine, giving a radiant, healthy look to the lips. I would say the formula is a cross between YSL Volupté Oil-in-Stick mentioned here (the tint-in-balms are slightly sheerer) and YSL Volupté Sheer Candy (the tint-in-balms feel softer on the lips but with a very similar color payoff). The more I think about these tint-in-balms, the more it makes sense to have a product that provides sheer color and conditions the lips. But that also means the formula is a bit slippery and generally these balms aren’t the most long lasting but of course, that isn’t their intended purpose.

YSL released these balms in 12 shades (all Made in France) and I instantly gravitated toward two of the shades. Both shades go equally well with a nude look, as well as with a smokey eye. They’re the kind of wear every day, anytime kind of shades.

No. 1 Dream Me Nude is a neutral blush pink, my lips but better kind of color. It’s the type of understated shade that I like to pop on when I’m out and about running errands, playing with my little one or working out at the gym. It’s definitely one of those universal shades that seems to flatter most complexions.

No. 10 Seduce Me Pink is a seductive raspberry shade, very feminine and elegant. It’s the kind of color I like to apply when I want to look more put together without seeming like I’m trying too hard.

I love just how mindless this product is for me! The formula makes it perfect for every day, very effortless to apply on the go and extremely versatile regardless of time of day, occasion or season. Essentially fail-safe! Have you already got your tint-in-balms?

These YSL tint-in-balms seem so cute and innovative. I just recently purchased one of YSL oil-in-stick lipstick and love it so much that I may have to go and pick up more of their products, and these balms seem like a must have, so I will check them out! Great post Cat and gorgeous photos as always!

You posted this at such a perfect time Cat, I’ve been looking at these on Sephora’s site and have been deciding whether or not to buy them! YSL is my first high-end lipstick and they’ll always have a special place in my heart. The little heart in the balm is such a playful touch, and I love that the color is build able too! Such wonderful review, thank you for sharing 🙂

I bought these without even being able to swatch them…. the BA at the airport opened the brand new sale stock from boxes, and we didn’t have time to go through all of them. I asked her which are the most popular, she opened up #10, and I just grabbed it. LOL! Afterwards, I wished I had found one with a white lip core, just for the pictures you know? Seeing your swatch now though, I’m glad I took #10! 😉

Oh I don’t blame you Linda! These are too adorable to pass up! And luckily, they are the kind of lip product that is essentially fail safe! The formula makes it that most shades would work on most people. They are buildable so you can choose just how much color you would like to show on your lips. Hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine! I bet it looks gorgeous on you! ~ Cat L.
